Cowhide Rug Size Guide: What Size Do You Need?

One of the most common mistakes when buying a cowhide rug is choosing the wrong size. Too small and the rug looks like an afterthought. Too large and it crowds the room. This guide will help you get it right the first time.

How to Measure Your Space

Before you shop, measure the area where the rug will go. Note the usable floor space – the area between your furniture pieces, not the full room dimensions.

Living Room

The two most common approaches:

• All legs on: All furniture legs sit on the rug. This defines a clear seating zone and works best in large rooms. You will need a rug of at least 8x10ft.
• Front legs only: Just the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. Works well in medium rooms and with a 6x8ft or 7x9ft rug.

Avoid: Floating rug syndrome – where no furniture touches the rug at all. This makes the room feel disconnected.

Dining Room

The rule is simple: the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the edge of the table on all sides. This ensures chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. For a 6-person dining table, you will need at least an 8x10ft rug.

Bedroom

• Queen/King bed: A 5x7ft or 6x8ft rug placed at the foot of the bed or under the lower two-thirds of the bed works well.
• Twin bed: A 4x6ft rug placed beside the bed is ideal.
• Beside the bed only: Two smaller rugs placed on each side of a queen or king create a balanced look.

• Medium (5-6ft): Bedroom accent, home office, reading nook
• Large (6-7ft): Living room with front-legs-on approach, dining room for 4-person table

Remember: cowhide dimensions are approximate. The organic shape of the hide means actual measurements may vary by a few inches. This is perfectly normal and part of what makes each rug unique.
