FAQ
Answers to the questions we hear most about genuine Brazilian cowhide rugs, from choosing the right hide to keeping it looking great for years.
Ordering, Shipping & Returns
Will I receive the exact cowhide shown in the photo?
Most of our listings carry several hides of the same pattern and size, so the photo shows a representative hide. The rug you receive will closely match it in color, pattern and size, but because every cowhide is natural, the exact markings vary from hide to hide. If you want to see a specific hide before buying, email us or visit our Los Angeles showroom.
How much does a real cowhide rug cost?
Price depends on three things: size, pattern and quality grade. Larger hides, rarer patterns and Grade A hides with even hair and minimal scarring cost more. Every listing shows the current price for that size and pattern, with no hidden markups.
Where do you ship?
We ship within the contiguous United States (the lower 48 states). We do not currently ship to Hawaii, Alaska or outside the US.
How is my order packaged?
Each hide is folded and securely wrapped to protect it during transit.
My rug arrived with creases. Will they go away?
Yes. Fold lines are normal after shipping. Lay the rug flat, hair side up, and the creases will relax on their own within a few days. For stubborn creases, turn the rug over, lightly mist the suede backing with water and place something heavy and flat on the area until it dries. Never iron a cowhide or apply direct heat.
What is your return policy?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, with the buyer covering return shipping. See our Shipping & Returns Policy for full details.
What if my rug arrives damaged or defective?
Contact us within 7 days of delivery at hello@mrcowhides.store with your order number and photos of the issue. Tanning or finishing defects, excessive shedding and shipping damage are covered by our quality guarantee, and we will replace the rug at no cost to you.
Can I see your rugs in person?
Yes. Our shop at 1249 La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90035 is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 7pm.
Choosing Your Cowhide
What size cowhide rug do I need?
Small hides (up to 5 ft) suit entryways and bedsides, medium (5 to 6 ft) works as a bedroom or office accent, large (6 to 7 ft) anchors a living or dining room, and XL (7 ft and up) makes a statement in big open spaces. In a living room, aim to leave 12 to 18 inches of floor showing on each side. Since every hide is natural, each listing shows its approximate dimensions. Our Buying Guide has more detail.
How can I tell if a cowhide rug is real?
A genuine cowhide has a soft suede backing, an irregular natural shape and hair that changes direction and length across the hide. Faux cowhide usually has a woven or fabric backing, a uniform printed pattern and perfectly even fibers. All Mr. Cowhides rugs are 100% genuine Brazilian cowhide.
What are the pros and cons of a cowhide rug?
Pros: very durable, naturally resistant to dirt and stains, low maintenance, one of a kind, and long-lasting with basic care.
Cons: it should not be soaked or machine washed, colors can fade in strong direct sunlight, and it is not suited to outdoor or very humid spaces.
What patterns and colors do you offer?
Our collection includes Tricolor (black, white and tan), Black & White, Salt & Pepper, Brindle, Light Grey Brindle and Hereford (rust-red and white). Tricolor and Black & White are the most versatile; Brindle and Hereford suit warmer, earthy or rustic rooms.
What do cowhide quality grades mean?
Grade A hides have minimal scarring, even hair and strong natural color. Grade B may show minor natural blemishes or slightly irregular edges. Grade C has more visible scarring and uneven hair. Every Mr. Cowhides rug is Grade A or Grade B, sourced from Brazil, where pasture-raised cattle produce hides with fewer scars and richer color.
Are cowhide rugs good for high-traffic areas?
Yes. Cowhide is one of the most durable natural rug materials and holds up well in entryways, living rooms and under dining tables. Rotate it every few months for even wear, and use a non-slip pad on hard floors.
Are cowhide rugs pet-friendly?
Many pet owners love cowhide because hair and dirt do not sink into it the way they do in woven rugs, and it vacuums clean easily. Blot accidents right away. Keep in mind that chewing, scratching or staining by pets is not covered by our warranty.
Care & Cleaning
How do I clean and care for a cowhide rug?
Shake it out every few weeks and vacuum on a low-suction setting (no beater bar), moving in the direction of the hair. Blot spills right away with a clean, dry cloth. For dried stains, use a little warm water with a drop of mild soap, then dry at room temperature. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading. See our full Care Guide.
Can I machine wash a cowhide rug?
No. Never machine wash, tumble dry or soak a cowhide rug, as water and heat can damage the leather. Spot clean instead, and use a professional leather cleaner for heavy soiling.
Why is my cowhide rug shedding?
Light shedding is normal, especially in the first few weeks, and in high-traffic spots. Vacuum with the hair direction on low suction to minimize it. Shedding well beyond normal levels may indicate a tanning defect and is covered by our warranty.
What if my cowhide rug gets wet?
Blot up as much moisture as you can, then lay the rug flat to air dry at room temperature, away from heaters and direct sun. Moisture trapped in the hide can lead to mildew and stiffness, so avoid bathrooms, damp basements and outdoor use.
How should I store a cowhide rug?
Roll it hair side out (do not fold it for long-term storage), wrap it loosely in breathable fabric rather than plastic, and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Does a real cowhide rug smell?
A properly tanned cowhide has little to no odor. Any slight smell from packaging usually fades within a few days of airing the rug out.
How long does a cowhide rug last?
With regular care, a quality cowhide rug can last 20 years or more, far longer than most synthetic rugs.
Sourcing & Support
Is buying a cowhide rug ethical?
Our hides are a natural byproduct of the Brazilian beef industry. No cattle are raised or harmed solely for their hides, and using them reduces waste. We work only with tanneries operating under Brazilian environmental and labor standards and never sell exotic or endangered skins. Read more about our ethical sourcing.
